Sports events anchor Hong Kong’s position as an Events Capital. Since 2004, the Major Sports Events Committee has launched the “M” Mark System and Support Packages to attract major international sports events to the city. The initiative seeks to promote sports development, generate economic benefits, stimulate public interest in sports, and strengthen social cohesion. In response to social and market shifts, the Government announced a new round of enhancement measures in August 2025. These measures further refine the system and its funding arrangements, marking a new milestone in the development of the “M” Mark System.

The “M” Mark System aims to foster a sustainable sporting culture by bringing world-class sports events to Hong Kong. Hosting such competitions gives local athletes a chance to compete on home ground, while rallying commercial and community support that help build a more connected society. At the same time, the forging of long-term partnerships with reputable and experienced event organisers also helps cement Hong Kong’s status as a Centre for Mega International Sports Events.
Recognised “M” Mark events receive comprehensive support, including promotion activities, logistics coordination, and financial subsidies. New events held in Hong Kong are eligible for a one-off marketing grant and rental subsidies at LCSD venues or other major venues. “M” Mark programmes span a wide spectrum of sports, from popular events such as the Hong Kong Marathon and the Hong Kong Sevens to other sports like esports, fencing, and tennis, showcasing the city’s diverse sporting landscape.

To better address social needs and the evolving sports market, a new round of enhancement measures was introduced in August 2025 to strengthen the vetting and funding mechanism of the “M” Mark System. These enhancements aim to ensure optimal use of resources, deliver best value for money, and further enhance the quality and appeal of "M" Mark events. Under the refined system, events are categorised as either “major sports events” or “exhibition matches/tournaments”, each subject to a distinct set of vetting criteria. The former places emphasis on their contribution to sports development in Hong Kong, while the latter focuses more on tourism promotion and local economic impact.
In addition, the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau will strengthen monitoring and accountability. If an organiser fails to stage an event as scheduled, or fails to meet agreed targets, the Committee may adjust the final grant accordingly to ensure effective use of public resources.
Having been running for more than two decades, the “M” Mark System has become a hallmark of Hong Kong’s major sports events. Over the years, funded events have attracted strong participation and enthusiasm from local and overseas audiences alike, breathing new life into the city’s economy. Looking ahead, the “M” Mark System will continue to move with the times, draw more international events to Hong Kong, and contribute to the development of local sports culture and industry.
