The LCSD is committed to assisting the NSAs in Hong Kong in setting up community sports clubs, while providing funding support in various forms for the latter to organise sports development programmes in its proactive efforts to enhance the public’s interests in sports. In this connection, the LCSD launched the foundation course on management development programme of community sports clubs, in which a range of basic training was offered to cultivate more volunteers on management of community sports clubs, with a view to shedding further light on the operation, management and planning of their activities for those who aspire to promote sports.

On another front, the LCSD organises the advanced course on management development programme of community sports clubs for those who have completed the foundation course, which covers theoretical knowledge and well-devised practicum, in a bid to enhance the management skills of those involved in promotion of community sports through sports clubs and cultivate more aspiring and capable volunteers, thereby reaching the ultimate goals of gradually improving the overall quality of NSAs and promoting continuous professional development of sports practitioners.

The graduation ceremony of the advanced course on management development programme of community sports club for 2023/24 cum sharing session was held at the LCSD Headquarters in the afternoon of 3 March 2024. The graduates have learnt how to apply the corporate governance philosophy and skills to the management of NSAs to further enhance their event planning and promotion skills, with a view to managing NSAs in a professional and efficient manner. Looking forward, they hope to acquire the knowledge and pass what they have learnt onto the next generation of volunteers, allowing those who aspire to work in sports management to outshine their predecessors and benefit the community.

During the sharing session, Miss Tsang Hei, a registered dietitian, was invited as a guest to speak on “How to Improve Exercise Efficiency with Nutrition”, allowing the audience to gain a deep understanding of their body and develop more effective exercise habits.

Miss Tsang pointed out that the incentives to do exercise varied from person to person, which could be broadly categorised into three major types: wellness, athletic performance and physique. That said, to achieve more advanced fitness goals, one must develop a healthy diet in which everyday meals should be balanced in terms of food groups, including grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and meat or their alternatives. Leading a hectic life, Hong Kong people usually eat out. Miss Tsang said that one could still maintain a balanced diet even if eating out so long as they followed the five rules of healthy dining out.

In addition to maintaining a balanced diet, it is equally important for us to sustain a healthy physique. Miss Tsang suggested that one should first assess his or her physical condition by scoring measures against such indicators as body mass index (BMI), body fat and waist circumference before drawing up bespoke fitness programmes to gain muscle and lose fat. However, it is advisable to implement such programmes step by step without haste, for they will become ineffective or even backfire. Only by setting practical and feasible objectives can we keep up the exercise routine and move towards the goal of sustaining an ideal physique.

People doing different sports may have diverse nutritional needs, and supplementing the body with the right nutrients at each stage of exercise can enhance training effectiveness. It is therefore indispensable to devise a comprehensive strategy for nutritional supplement during exercise. Miss Tsang gave the tips and points to note on nutritional supplements before, during and after exercise and recommended suitable pre- and post-exercise light refreshments for timely hydration, carbohydrate replenishment and muscle repairment, thereby ensuring optimal athletic performance. The audience found it rewarding to listen to what Miss Tsang had shared about diets, exercise as well as physical and mental well-beings.

The graduates were presented the Certificate of the Community Sports Club Management Development Programme Advanced Course by the LCSD, and subsequently shared their experiences in groups. The LCSD hopes that the graduates will put what they have learnt into practice in future, excel and inspire the next generation of volunteers in their respective NSAs, while promoting sports development in the city in unison to reach the goals of enhancing professionalism and developing sports as an industry.
