The Closing cum Award Presentation Ceremony of the 9th Hong Kong Games took place on 9 June at the Kowloon Park Sports Centre. Kevin Yeung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, officiated at the ceremony. In addition to drawing a close to the Games, the ceremony also presented awards in inter-district sports competitions, a testimony to the efforts and achievements of all athletes.

The Hong Kong Games (hereinafter the “HKG”), organised by the Sports Commission, is a biennial, major comprehensive sports event, with the 18 districts as its participating units. The games featured eight competition events, namely athletics, badminton, 3-on-3 Basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. The selection of district athletes took place from July 2023 to January 2024, while the inter-district sports competitions were held from April to June 2024. After competitions, various awards were presented, including champions, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up in the eight events, as well as the “District with Impressive Progress” award. The ceremony also awarded the “District with the Best Progress”, the “District with the Most Gold Medals” and the “Overall Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up of the 9th Hong Kong Games”. The results of the 9th HKG have been uploaded onto its website. Please scan the QR code below for viewing.

To encourage citizens of all ages and abilities to participate in sports, this year’s HKG introduced age categories for some inter-district sports competitions, allowing young people to compete with one another in their respective age groups. Apart from the inter-district sports competitions, the 9th HKG also featured four sports events for persons with disabilities, namely Wheelchair 3-on-3 Basketball Competition, Boccia Competition, Swimming Competition for Persons with Intellectual Disability, and Table Tennis Competition for Persons with Intellectual Disability. In addition to continuing the Demonstration Competition - Women’s Futsal, this year’s HKG added three “urban sports” demonstration competitions, namely Breaking, Skateboarding and Sport Climbing, all of which are hugely popular among young teenagers, allowing young athletes with different sporting interests to showcase their best skills. It was encouraging to note this year’s HKG drew participation from over 1 500 young athletes.

The HKG also held various community engagement activities, offering a chance for active members of the public who have not enrolled in competitions to take part in the HKG. Popular activities such as the “Jockey Club Vitality Run” took place on 3 March along the Shing Mun River in Shatin, while a carnival of the Run was held at the Yuen Wo Playground on the same day, featuring stage performances, game booths with a theme of “new sports”, sports interactive game zones blending multimedia and virtual reality elements and a photo zone, with attendance of over 5 000 visitors. The “Dynamic Moments Photo Contest” of the HKG was drawn to a close, with selection of winning entries being underway. Members of the public may view the winning entries on the HKG’s webpage in late July.

The 9th HKG was concluded successfully. We hope that citizens will continue their staunch support to the next year’s HKG under the slogan “Our City, our Games!”. See you in the 10th HKG!
