Launched in December 1996, the Outreach Music Interest Courses provide short-term fundamental music training for people of different ages. Group lessons in Western and Chinese musical instruments and various music topics are conducted every week at venues across the territory.

The enrolment for this stage is conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.
 

Starting from 28 February, interested individuals can make applications by submitting a duly completed application form together with original/ photocopy of the applicant’s identification document(Note 1) and the tuition fee (a crossed cheque made payable to the “The Government of the HKSAR”; postdated cheque will not be accepted(Note 2)), in person or by a representative to any music centre of the Music Office during the designated time (see the section of “Enrolment & Payment” below). All Music Office Music Centres will distribute quota tags at 9:30am on the first day of Stage 2 recruitment and process the applications according to the order of tag numbers from 10:00am onwards. Quota tags will be distributed in the lobby on the ground floor or outside the lobby for some music centres. Please contact the respective music centres for details.
 

Each person is allowed to submit a maximum of 2 application forms and each applicant can apply for 1 instrument foundation class and 1 workshop only. This restriction will be removed from 29 February onwards. Trainees, who have successfully enrolled in Stage 1 recruitment, can also apply for classes with remaining quotas then
 

On the first day of Stage 2 recruitment (i.e. 28 February), if the Hong Kong Observatory issues a Red/ Black Rainstorm Warning Signal, Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Pre-No.8 or Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.8 or above, anytime during 7:00am - 9:30 am, or all Music Office music centres have to be closed due to any special circumstance, the enrolment on the day will be cancelled and postponed to 29 February. If the inclement weather/ special circumstance continues, please observe the announcement on this website for the latest enrolment arrangements.

Notes to Applicants

  1. In Stage 1 recruitment, all oversubscribed courses will be processed by ballot. The remaining quotas will be open to enrolment on a first-come-first-served basis during Stage 2 recruitment (i.e. from 28 February onwards).

  2. Current trainees of the “Instrumental Music Training Scheme” are allowed to apply for the workshops of the Outreach Music Interest Courses, but not for the instrument foundation classes.

  3. Every trainee will be assigned not more than 1 instrument foundation class and 1 workshop. This restriction will be removed from 29 February onwards. Trainees, who have successfully enrolled in Stage 1 recruitment, can also apply for classes with remaining quotas then.

  4. Before submission of application, all applicants should read carefully the course prospectus for enrolment requirement, age limit and requisite musical proficiency prescribed for the respective courses. Applicants who fail to meet the requirement will be disqualified, and no refund or transfer of tuition fee will be made.

  5. Applicants should select classes according to their age and musical proficiency. Ages of applicants will be based on 11 March 2024.

  6. Upon submission of application, the applicant is deemed to have fully understood and agreed to comply with all rules in connection with the admission and attendance of Outreach Music Interest Courses of the Music Office.

  7. Admission is at the discretion of the Music Office.

  8. A receipt and a Trainee Memorandum will be issued to each applicant after payment of tuition fee. Applicants should immediately check against the information on the receipt. No separate notification of class commencement will be issued. Trainees are expected to be present for classes at the time and venue indicated in the Memorandum, and should bring along their receipts to the first lesson and retain them until the end of the course.

  9. The Music Office reserves the right to change the instructor, time and venue of the course and cancel the whole course or individual lessons as necessary. The applicants concerned will be notified and refunded for course/ lesson thus cancelled (except for class cancellations due to inclement weather). They should provide the original payment receipts for refund. Their places will not be reserved for application for future courses, whether they accept the refund or not.

  10. No refund or transfer of tuition fees can be arranged for applicants who opt to withdraw from the course. Besides, the fees cannot be applied to other courses.

  11. Postdated cheque will not be accepted. In the case of a dishonored cheque, the enrolment will be cancelled without further notice to the applicant and the Music Office will reserve the right to take legal and/or administrative actions.

  12. Applications by telephone, email or fax are not accepted.

  13. The Outreach Music Interest Courses aim to provide participants with short-term basic musical training and enable them to experience the fun of music learning. Trainees who have completed the training and wish to further their studies may approach and seek advice from other music education institutions.

  14. The Music Office has the power of final interpretation of the terms and conditions, and reserves the right to amend the terms and conditions without prior notice.

Certificate of Attendance

Certificates of Attendance will be issued to those trainees with attendance rates of 80% or above. Eligible trainees should collect the certificates, in person or by a representative, during October - November 2024, by presenting their payment receipts or the original copy/ photocopy of the trainee’s identification document during opening hours at the music centre designated according to the district of class location as follows. No separate notifications will be issued. Trainees who fail to collect the certificates during the collection period are deemed to have given up the same, and reissuance will not be made by the Music Office.
