Music Office Children’s Choir

The Music Office Children’s Choir, formerly known as the “Music Office Chinese Folk Singing Children Ensemble”, was formed in 1981 to promote the singing of Chinese folk songs. Recent repertoire has, however, included both Western and Chinese choral works, among which are several local premieres and operettas like Cinderella, Noah and His Floating Zoo and The Legend of Chang 'E - the Lady in the Moon.

In addition to regular appearances in Music Office concerts, the Choir has also participated in a good number of invited performances. These include guest appearance in the annual concerts of the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Tuen Mun Children’s Choir, Sham Shui Po Children’s Choir and Kowloon City District Children’s Chorus, Kowloon City Schools’ Music Interflow, as well as exchanges such as a joint concert with the Macao Youth Choir in Macau, a music exchange with the visiting All-American Boys Chorus and the Choir’s participation in a Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra concert in 2018.

With 74 members aged 8 to 15, the Music Office Children’s Choir is currently trained by May Ho and Kobe Ip. Recruitment is held annually through open audition. Conductors and Piano accompanists

The Music Office Youth Choir was established in 1980. With a repertoire which spans from sacred to secular, classical to popular, and Chinese to Western, the Choir has performed regularly in local concerts and collaborated with many visiting music groups, among which are the Kagoshima Senior High School Choir and Prunus Female Choir from Japan, College of Saint Benedict-Saint John’s University Choral Arts Ensemble and Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra from USA, The Chieftains from Ireland and the reputed Bach Choir from UK.

Embarking on its first overseas tour to Malaysia and Singapore in 1997, the Music Office Youth Choir next visited Kagoshima, Japan in 2002, where their performances under the auspices of the Kagoshima Prefectural Government were met with critical acclaim. The Choir has since participated in several overseas choral festivals, with encouraging results attained in each: two Gold Diplomas and a Category Winner and Jury Award each at the 2009 A Voyage of Songs International Choral Festival in Penang; two Gold Diplomas and a Category Winner Award at the 2014 Sing n Joy Vienna -29th International Schubert Choir Competition and three Gold Awards and two Category Winner Awards at respectively the 2016 Singapore International Choral Festival and 11th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition in 2019.

With a total of 71 members between the age of 15 and 25, the Music Office Youth Choir is trained and managed by Dr. Angelina Au and Chan Wan-hong. Recruitment is held annually through open audition.

Dr. Angelina Au (Conductor)

Dr. Angelina Au received her early musical training in Hong Kong, and was later awarded an Institute of International Education Scholarship to further her studies in the United States. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hollins College, a Master of Music degree from the University of Miami, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the College-Conservatory of Cincinnati. Among her teachers were the late internationally celebrated concert pianist Ivan Davis and piano pedagogue Santos Ojeda. In addition to appearances as solo and collaborative pianist in vocal and instrumental recitals, Dr. Au is also an accomplished singer with extensive experience in solo and choral singing.

Dr. Au is presently Senior Music Officer of the Musicianship/ Training Support Section of the Music Office, where her responsibilities include overseeing the organization of choral and musicianship training programmes, and the co-ordination of support for the Instrumental Music Training Scheme. As conductor of the Music Office Youth Choir, Dr. Au has led the ensemble on a continued course of development, with recognition and honours won in overseas tours and competitions.

May Ho (Conductor and Piano accompanist)

May Ho received her early musical training in piano and double bass in Hong Kong and furthered her music studies in Britain at King’s College London where she obtained her Bachelor (Honours) and Master degrees in Music, specializing in Theory & Analysis and Composition. Ho was also active in the field of music composition during her studies and participated in composers’ symposiums and voluntary work for some major British orchestras.

After returning to Hong Kong, Ho joined the Music Office where she was mainly responsible for musicianship, theory & aural training. She also served as piano accompanist in many choir concerts and trainees’ concerts. Ho has a special enthusiasm for music composition and is a member of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Limited (CASH). Some of her choral works were performed under her own baton in the Music Office annual choir concerts. Her composition Enchanted City scored for symphonic band was also premiered in 2007 at the International Youth & Music Festival and Competition in Vienna. Ho is currently Assistant Music Officer of the Musicianship Section of the Music Office, and the conductor & accompanist of Music Office Children's Choir.
May Ho

Kobe Ip (Conductor and Piano accompanist)

Kobe Ip graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Queensland, where he had received numerous scholarships and awards, including the University of Queensland Arts Faculty Fee-pay scholarship, University of Queensland and St Leo’s College Music Achievement Scholarship, and Dean Commendations from the Arts Faculty. Ip is an active musician who composes and performs as both piano soloist and accompanist. His jazz arrangement was selected by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Government as an exemplar for the New Secondary School Music Curriculum. Ip is also an active choral singer, and was respectively a choral scholar at the St. John’s Cathedral Brisbane and a member of the University of Queensland chorale.

Ip is currently Assistant Music Officer of the Musicianship Section of the Music Office, where in addition to his teaching duties, serves as manager, conductor and accompanist of the Music Office Children's Choir.
Kobe Ip

Chan Wan-hong (Piano accompanist)

Chan Wan-hong graduated from the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he majored in piano performance under the tutelage of Raymond Young. He then furthered his studies at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied with pianist Gordon Fergus-Thompson and was awarded Master of Piano Performance with distinction. He has continued to perform as soloist and accompanist since graduation.

Chan is currently Assistant Music Officer of the Musicianship Section of the Music Office. In addition to his teaching duties, serves as piano accompanist and manager of the Music Office Youth Choir.
