In celebration of the Music Office transcending beyond its 45-year mark, the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO) together with guest conductor cum former Music Office instructor Ho Man-chuen, percussionist Chin Kwok-wai and generations of HKYCO alumni, will perform a diverse repertoire of jubilant Chinese music classics in the vigour of “United We Go” to emanate the everlasting charisma of Chinese cultures.

Tsui Ying-fai

Tsui Ying-fai is currently Chief Music Officer of the Music Office.

Through the years, Tsui has been active in the field of Chinese music as performer, conductor, educator, and music researcher, worked as a tutor and research staff of the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and has taught at the Music Department and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He published articles on Chinese instrumental music in publications such as the former Hong Kong Provisional Urban Council, the Education and Manpower Bureau, music academic journals in the United States and the well-known Garland Encyclopedia of World Music.

Tsui has been serving the Music Office for more than two decades, and was the conductor of HKYCO, Music Office Instructors’ Chinese Orchestra and Music Office Junior Chinese Orchestra. He led the HKYCO to perform in many places including Beijing, Xi’an, Jiangsu, Taiwan, Shanghai, Shenyang and Singapore. Besides his official conducting duties, Tsui also conducted in concerts of several local Chinese orchestras and was invited to conduct in the Taipei Youth Chinese Orchestra Concert in Taipei in 2014.

Tsui also served on adjudicating panels of music competitions such as the National Chinese Orchestral Contests in Malaysia, the 2019 Singapore Youth Festival Chinese Orchestras/ Ensembles Presentation, and the 2020 Macao Young Musicians Competition, and as an advisor for the 2022 Macao Young Musicians Competition.


Tsui Ying-fai

Kwok Kin-ming

Kwok Kin-ming is currently Senior Music Officer of the Chinese Music Section of the Music Office. He is also the conductor of the HKYCO and Music Office Instructors’ Chinese Orchestra.

Kwok obtained his Master of Music degree from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Chinese orchestra conducting, under the tutelage of renowned conductor Professor Yan Huichang. In 2011, Kwok was the second runner-up in the first Hong Kong International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music and awarded Outstanding Young Conductor.

As a conductor, Kwok has collaborated with many renowned orchestras, including Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Jilin Chinese Orchestra, Macao Chinese Orchestra, Wuxi Chinese Orchestra, Feiyun Chinese Orchestra and the Chinese Orchestra of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

In 2016, Kwok led the HKYCO to tour in Shanghai and Shenyang, where the Orchestra jointly performed with the Chinese Orchestra of Shenyang Conservatory of Music. In 2018, under Kwok’s baton, the HKYCO and Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra jointly presented a concert titled TOGETHER with in the Lion City.

Ho Man-chuen

Ho Man-chuen is an acclaimed music educationalist and conductor.

Having emigrated to Hong Kong in 1980, Ho joined the Music Office and served as Assistant Music Officer, then Music Officer until his retirement in 2009. During his tenure, he was responsible for teaching Chinese percussion and orchestra training, and nurtured numerous young musicians. Ho is currently an instructor of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Resident Conductor of the Academy Chinese Orchestra, Artistic Adviser of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, and Artistic Adviser cum Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra.

Ho studied conducting with Xia Feiyun, and participated in conducting masterclasses held by Tang Muhai, Chen Zhaohuang and Peng Xiuwen. He was the conductor of the HKYCO for 29 years and led the Orchestra to tour in the United States, Canada, Singapore, as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an and Nanjing in the Mainland. He has conducted numerous local orchestras, including the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Joint Orchestra of Hong Kong (for 1997 reunification concert), the Academy Chinese Orchestra, etc., and collaborated with renowned musicians including Min Huifan, Xiao Baiyong, Yu Qiwei, Zhu Changyao, Hao Yuqi, Gong Yi, and others.


Ho Man-chuen
Chin Kwok-wai

Chin Kwok-wai is a local renowned percussionist, and currently Assistant Percussion Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He joined the Orchestra in 1989. Chin graduated from the School of Music of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 1995, he received the Lee Hysan Foundation Scholarship to further his studies in the United States. In 2008, he was presented with the Award for Outstanding Young Artist by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and was one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons selected by the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong.

A veteran performer in both Chinese and western percussion instruments, Chin has represented Hong Kong in various performance tours around the world and was the Percussion Principal of the HKYCO. In 1996, he became the first Hong Kong percussionist to be invited by the Percussion Arts Society to give a solo performance at their annual International Convention (PASIC) in Texas and received unanimous acclaim. He was further invited to attend the World Percussion Festival in Boston for academic exchange and performances. Since 2000, Chin’s name has been included in the Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century published by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge University.

In 1998, Chin founded the Hong Kong Drum Ensemble to actively promote Chinese drum music and participate in community and charity events. He was appointed Honorary Artist-in-Residence of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (now “Hong Kong University of Education”) since 2010, and Resident Conductor of its Chinese Orchestra in 2014-2017.

Ho Shun-yin

Ho Shun-yin is currently Assistant Music Officer of the Musicianship Section of the Music Office, and serves as the conductor and piano accompanist of the Music Office Children’s Choir and Youth Choir respectively.

Ho obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with First Class Honors and Dean’s List, under the tutelage of Professor Gabriel Kwok. She then graduated with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance with Distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she received full scholarship and was further awarded the Licentiate and the Diploma of the Academy.

Ho is known as a young artist with “deeply sensitive and compelling playing” (Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 4). She was a prizewinner in various international competitions during her study, including the Gold Prize and Soloist Award at the 15th International Chopin Piano Competition Japan, Livorno International Piano Competition in Italy, Norah Sande Award in Eastbourne, the United Kingdom, Sterndale Bennett Prize, and Beethoven Concerto Prize at the Royal Academy of Music etc. She has performed extensively across Asia and Europe, from Sanya, Santou, Foshan, to Madrid, Murcia, Eastbourne, and London, etc., in collaboration with distinguished artists and orchestras.

Chan Kai-him (Gaohu)

Chan Kai-him is a young huqin artist born and raised in Hong Kong and was the Concertmaster of HKYCO. He held a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 2016, with a double major in erhu and gaohu under the tutelages of Wong On-yuen and Yu Qiwei. He also benefited from the coaching of many virtuosi such as Xiao Baiyong, Liu Yang, Jiang Cairu, Tian Zaili and Xue Ke. In 2018, he further obtained a Master of Music degree with distinction from the HKAPA, majoring in gaohu under the tutelage of Yu Qiwei. He is now a visiting student at the HKAPA majoring in Chinese conducting with Chew Hee Chiat. Chan received several scholarships for his outstanding performance, including the HSBC HKAPA China Study Programme Scholarship (2013-15), the SAPA Scholarship (2014-15), Dr George and Maisie Choa Charitable Foundation Scholarship (2014), Spring-Time Stage Productions Scholarship (2015) and Cecil Leung Scholarship (2016).

In 2015, Chan was selected as one of the “Young Music Makers” by Radio Television Hong Kong. In the same year, he won a silver prize in the Youth Professionals Group of the International Youth Erhu Competition (Hong Kong). He is currently the Concertmaster of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, and was a freelance musician of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Macau Chinese Orchestra, etc. He also represented the HKAPA, the HKYCO and several music institutions to go on tours for artistic exchanges and performances in Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Hungary, Ireland, Mainland China, etc.

Tung Tsz-ching (Yehu)

Tung Tsz-ching is a doctoral student in musicology in the University of Hong Kong, awardee of the China National Arts Fund, and examiner for music of the Hong Kong Arts Development council. She is also a local young huqin player, curator and a music critic. Tung graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2015 with a Bachelor of Music (Honours), majoring in huqin under the tutelage of Wong On-yuen.

With an insatiable curiosity for global string instruments, Tung has ventured to the musical realms of Uyghur traditional music and Persian music. Tung is particularly interested in Cantonese regional music, which is evident in her role as the curator of the "Everlasting Cantonese Music" project for the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble. This initiative has received project grants from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2019, and has also been granted by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme by the Cultural, Sport and Tourism Bureau in 2023. In 2021, she also curated an Art-tech project “Arts in the Air”, which is a groundbreaking collaboration with the Hong Kong Housing Society and Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited. This project melds drama, dance, and music performances with augmented reality, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

In addition to her work as a curator, Tung is also the presenter of “Music in China” on Radio 4 of the Radio Television Hong Kong.

Tung Tsz-ching

Tse Yuen-yau (Yangqin)

Tse Yuen-yau is currently Assistant Music Officer of the Chinese Music Section of the Music Office, teaching yangqin. He started his musical path when he was five, under coaching from Ng Chiu-shing. He joined the Instrumental Music Training Scheme of the Music Office from 2004 and studied with Chan Shum-lum. He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the tutelage of Yu Mei-lai.

Tse was respectively awarded the second runner-up, first runner-up and the championship at the beginner's level, high level and advanced level of the Yangqin Solo Category in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. He also respectively seized the second runner-up and championship in the Chinese Music Solo Award of the same festival in 2007 and 2008, and was then selected to attend the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod as a representative of Hong Kong. In 2012, Tse joined the fifth Hong Kong Students Open Music Competition and won the championship in the Chinese Music Category. He also visited and performed around the world, such as Japan, Canada, Malaysia, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang, etc.

Tse Yuen-yau

Chan Sze-tung (Qinqin)

Chan graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and majored in ruan and liuqin under renowned yueqin and zhongruan performer, Professor Lui Kwanon. She earned the Diploma in Performing Arts (Music), the Bachelor’s Degree in Music (Honours) and the Master of Music Degree. She started learning zhongruan at the Music Office since 2001, where she was coached by Zhang Yanru and Fong Ka-po, and became the Ruan Principal of the HKYCO. During her study, she obtained several awards in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, and she has been awarded several scholarships for her excellent academic performance. In 2011, she and her friends formed 4x4 Plucked, which was selected as the 2011 RTHK Young Music Makers, and participated in radio programme recordings and performances. She is now the Resident Musician at the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, and a part-time instructor and performer at the Music Office.

Chan Sze-tung

To Suet-hin (Dizi)

To Suet-hin is currently a freelance musician of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and member of Hong Kong Bamboo Flute Society. She began her dizi study at age ten as with Hui Wing-kwong and Choo Boon-chong, Assistant Dizi Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. To won first prize in senior level of dizi solo, second prize in senior level of xiao solo, and third prize in advanced level of dizi solo in Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. In 2012, she attained the Performance Diploma of the Central Conservatory of Music. In 2016, To became a Community Culture Ambassador and often participate in community promotion activities; in the same year She represented the HKYCO to visit Shanghai and Shenyang for music exchange. In 2018, To performed a new piano and xiao duet Sunset Harmony in the Air with Israeli pianist Alomg Segal. In 2019 she held her graduation solo recital at the Recital Hall of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She completed her Performance Diploma (Music) in 2015 and a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree in 2019 at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Art, with a major in dizi as a student of Sun Yongzhi, Dizi Principal of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and a minor in xiao with well-known dongxiao virtuoso Tam Po-shek.

Tang Suet-ching (Yangqin)

  • Currently a undergraduate student in the Department of Chinese Music of the Xinghai Conservatory of Music majoring in yangqin under the instruction of Hao Wenjing, Tang also received yangqin lessons from Tse Yuen-yau of the Music Office in her early years.
  • Tang won the silver medal for her yangqin solo at 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Artist Music Week Competition (College Performance Group).

Chan Ho-yan (Pipa)

  • Currently in the Bachelor of Music programme at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a pipa major under the tutelage of Zhang Ying. Chan studied pipa in the Music Office with Li Ping since age eight.
  • Chan was the champion of advanced pipa solo competition at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and received the Outstanding Performance Award at the Pipa International Festival in Liaoyuan, etc.

Li Hang-tsun (Erhu)

  • Li is completing her master’s degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, under Zhou Yi’s and Ngai Kwunwa’s guidances for erhu and banhu She is also mentored by Zhang Chongxue, a renowned huqin performer and the Head of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Chinese Music department. Li started learning erhu with Cheung Kwong-sing and Cheung Wai-fung of the Music Office from age seven.
  • Li is now the Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Chinese Orchestra and the HKYCO. She also performed with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Macao Chinese Orchestra, and Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble. She was awarded The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund Scholarship in 2022-23.

Au Yeung Wing-fung (Bangdi)

  • Au Yeung is currently studying dizi with Chan King-tsun at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts,.
  • In 2017 she earned her Performance Diploma in dizi of the Central Conservatory of Music with distinction, and a silver medal in the first "Songting Longyin" National Dizi Invitational Competition for the Professional Youth Group in 2019.

Luk Tsun-ki (Qudi)

  • Luk is studying his bachelor degree, majoring in both dizi with Sun Yongzhi and Chinese percussion with Yim Hok-man at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
  • Luk achieved champion and 1st-runner up awards in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival dizi solo advanced competition in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In 2018, he entered the "Qin Yuan Cup" dizi competition of the first Taipei International Dizi Guan Arts Festival and won the gold medal in Youth Group B.

Suen Tsz-kit (Sheng)

  • Suen received sheng training from Loo Sze-wang of the Music Office since childhood.
  • He won several prizes in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival sheng solo competitions, including the first runner up in the 70th Senior Group, the 71st and the 73rd Advanced Group.

Tsoi Wai-yin (Suona)

  • Tsoi is currently studying suona with Wu Chun-hei at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In his early years, he received suona lessons from Law Hang-leung in the Music Office.
  • He was selected to participate in the "Young Music Makers 2019" programme of the Radio Television Hong Kong. In 2023, he was selected as the soloist for the suona concerto Ode to the Sky in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Chinese Orchestra concert.

Law Wang-sum (Percussion)

  • Currently studying in the Bachelor of Music programme at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Law is majoring in Chinese percussion under the tutelage of Yim Hok-man and used to study Chinese percussion with Tse Tsz-chung in the Music Office.
  • Law won the championship of the 18th Hong Kong Synergy 24 Drum Competition, the Best Drummer Award for the Designated Repertoire Group “Flying Dragon and Leaping Tiger” of the 2023 Hong Kong Synergy 24 Drum Competition, and a silver award in the Advanced Professional Group of the Nanyang International Music Competition 2023.
